Monday, March 9th, 2020 begins the two day festival of Purim; a Jewish festival commemorating the miracle God performed for the Jewish people as told in the Book of Esther in the Bible.

The day before Purim is traditionally the Fast of Esther, a day to fast and connect with God just as the Jewish people did for three days before Queen Esther went in to see the King. For more information here is an informative article Fast of Esther
It is also traditional to make Hamentashen, a triangle shaped cookie filled with any delicious thing you can think of: Nutella, chocolate, marshmallow fluff, chocolate chips, white chocolate or marmalade! They are really good!
This holiday is so much fun; you get to dress up and it's a mitzvah to feast! What could be better!!! This year we shall be full of joy with dinner at our friends house on the first night and a costume party at our sisters the next night! It should be "a lot"( see what I did there?!) of fun! If you enjoy re-tellings, here is one of our favorites of the story of Esther!
There are four mitzvot (good deeds) connected to Purim: The reading of the Megilah (the book of Esther), Mishloach Manot (sending food gifts to friends), Matanot La'evyonim (gifts to the poor) and to make a festive meal.
There is no mention of God's name in the entire book of Esther, as if He is hidden; working behind the scenes on the behalf of His people the Jews. Esther's true nationality was hidden as well, so it is customary to dress up in costumes and hide your own identity. Last year Katherine dazzled as Audrey Hepburn, but this year... she is going undercover as a Secret Agent! Her second-hand sunglasses were soaking in the bathroom sink last night to remove any germs! Her costume entails a black knee length skirt, a leopard print blouse, black high heels, afore mentioned sunglasses and a pink leather peacoat with her hair pulled back into a sensible bun!
I am going as a country peasant... again!! Last year I was a Gypsy and the year before that as a country farm girl, but hey! If your going to dress up why not become what you want to be? I had gotten a really cute red check peasant type dress from the thrift store, but the elastic in the neck is gone, so Mamma is helping me put in a gathering stitch to make it modest again!
