Goody-two-shoes: A character who was just so morally good
Detective Jocelyn Carter
(Person of Interest)
The thing you need to know about Carter is that first and foremost she is a good cop. Her dedication to catching the bad guys and protecting/saving innocent people is her passion. When she first meets John Reese, she dubs him The Man in the Suit, and hunts him down as the vigilante she believes him to be. As she learns more about the life-saving work Reese does, her opinions of him change and she ends up helping when she can. Another trait I admire in her is her loyalty; she may not agree with you, but she has your back. And if the show had made room for a romance, Reese and Carter so should have gotten together! Their banter back and forth is so entertaining!!
Jane Bennet
(Pride & Prejudice, 1995)
Jane Bennet is one of the most kindhearted, sacrificial and "good" fictional characters I know of! She is so willing to serve others and never lets on about how miserable she herself may be feeling, but just goes on as before, putting on a contented face.
When others slight or mistreat her, she graciously refuses to think badly of them until it is absolutely impossible to ignore the facts. During the tragedy of Mr. Bingley's sudden departure, she never thought to complain, but accepted it calmly.
Heartbreaker: A character who made you cry
Roland Leighton
(Testament Of Youth)
WARNING SPOILERS: I don't normally cry during movies... but this movie was sooo sad! When we meet Roland he's a young man with his whole life stretched out before him. Like so many of his generation when the War began his future ended. I'm a sucker for the strong/broody/deep thinking (who would probably really annoy me in real life) types so Roland quickly became a favorite character. I mean he was so sweet to Vera, encouraging her to pursue her dreams and listening to her. And then the war came and off he goes to fight and then he dies a day before his wedding and all Vera is left with is her memories and a poem. My goodness, if you are not crying what's wrong with you??? I always approach movies about war already saddened because I know the history that the characters don't. (Also someone will no doubt die before it's over.) Anyways, Roland deserved better. He deserved to come home, marry Vera and go on to live a quiet English life of thoughtful reflection. But as Cary Holbert puts it "Death comes as it pleases; it is no respecter of persons leaving memories and a fading sound of a familiar voice"
Fanny Price
(Mansfield Park, 1999)
I was welling up multiple times during the course of this movie for Fanny! First, the household is generally neglectful/unkind towards her. Then Sir Bertram gives her the ultimatum of either accepting Mr. Crawford's proposal or leaving Mansfield Park. Then she has the further struggle of Mr. Crawford's continued attentions. I just felt so sorry for her, scorned and all alone!
And Mary Crawford, who was supposedly her friend, how did she comfort her dear Fanny when she was banished from Mansfield Park? She so sweetly tells her goodbye, repeating how in love her brother is and how she should change her mind and marry him! Come on, lady; can't you see that this is a banishment?? That poor Fanny is being sent away under a dark cloud? That this is a miserable day in Fanny's life? That she's being separated from her dear friend Edmund who you have caught in you're clutches? And now you're going to add more pressure on the poor girl?
Parrot: A character who won’t stop talking
Ruby Mae Morrison
(Christy)
Ruby Mae is such an energetic character, super eager to discover all about the life outside of her home. She talks NON STOP nearly driving everyone crazy with her constant questions....and numerous possum dishes! There is one episode in the TV series where Miss Alice is going away on a retreat to spend time with God and has taken a vow of silence for the duration of her trip and guess who hitches a ride with her? Ruby Mae!! What ensues is Ruby Mae chattering enough for the both of them, nearly causing Miss Alice to break her vow and it's so funny!! I really like how eager she is to learn and to help those around her.
Yes, I had to choose Wooten for this character type! He is always so randomly hilarious and as you know, if you are an Odyssey fan, he never is lacking in the conversation department! (I'm sure Jess Harnell just has a blast playing this character on set.) I was trying to think of one of my favorite episodes with Wooten in it, and "Hear Me, Hear Me", comes to mind. In this episode, Connie and Eugene are arguing over the other not paying attention to what they say and Wooten holds a contest between them to find out which of them has really been listening all the time....
It's really funny - you guys will have to listen to the episode some time! But to wet your taste-buds, below is a fan made video of a scene from "Hear Me, Hear Me". FYI- If you don't listen to Odyssey, Wooten is the character asking Connie and Eugene the questions.
Devilish: Your favorite Villain
Professor Fate
(The Great Race)
I grew up watching this movie and LOVED it!! We recently re-watched it and there are a some *ahem* moments, but my goodness it is SOOOO FUNNY!!!
The Great Race tells the story of an automobile race starting in New York and ending in Paris. The two main competitors are The Great Leslie, a handsome, teeth-twinkling, popular dare-devil, and the villainous, but hilarious Professor Fate. The professor has great aspirations of becoming as well loved and famous as the Great Leslie, but something always goes wrong with his stunts.....or his attempts to hurt/maime/kill Leslie during his stunts. I just love his determination to beat the Great Leslie no matter what, even if it means turning down a chance to become king. His witty comments and comebacks are often quoted around our house and the interactions between the Professor and his sidekick Max are legendary!!
George Warleggen
(Poldark)
I know with a villain, you are supposed to hate them, but I just think George is hilarious! It's so hard to completely take him seriously - even when he's up to no good! His snobby persona that he puts on, and the way he endeavors to shield himself from embarrassment when looking rather idiotic in front of Ross is so funny to me!
I also feel sorry for George. (I'm really breaking the "hate the villain" stereotype now). When Elisabeth lies to his face over their son, Valentine, and accuses him of doubting her, George just melts with anguish! I hate the way she twisted his emotions around like that! On the flip side though, George can indeed be very cruel and unmerciful, so he is definitely still the villain of the show.
Love interest: A character who, if alive in reality, you would want to marry
Vernon
(This Beautiful Fantastic)
I was having a really hard time coming up with an answer to this one. Yes, there are quite a few male characters I would really like to meet and get to know, but marry? I may have been taking the question too literally, but then Katherine came to my rescue and suggested Vernon to me and to be honest I am all on board for this one!! I mean come on? Who wouldn't want to marry such a sweet person? I loved Vernon so much in this movie and yes, I believe he and Bella should have gotten together, but since they didn't I shall snatch him up!! Throughout the movie Vernon is always thinking of others. He comes to cook Bella breakfast as a thank you, he puts up with ALfie's abuse for years and even after he quits still makes him Black Pudding since he knows he likes it. He even helps Bella with the garden, despite his allergies. And he cooks!! And has the most adorable twin girls!!! I'm sold!
Option No. 1
Chuck Stewart
(When Hope Calls)
First up we have this guy! I love Chuck's character because he is so gentle, kindhearted, funny, and sticks up for what is right.
Ok, I'm now drawing a blank - it's been quite awhile since I've seen When Hope Calls, so more details are evading me.....so just take my word for it! He's a great character!
Option No. 2
Mr. Darcy
(Pride and Prejudice The Musical)
And next we have Mr. Darcy! I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this version of Mr. Darcy! While this particular portrayal is still the same Mr. Darcy we all know, Justin Mortellitit brings a little more "pzazz" to his character in this play. Mr. Darcy is a man of wit, strong conviction, compassion, (yes, he sings quite wonderfully), and he would do anything for the woman he loves! Here is his and my, uh, I meant Lizzie's "get together" song from the musical:
Sidekick: A character who was always loyal no matter what
Caleb is one of the funnest characters!!! I love his sweet/goofy smile, down-to-earth common sense and cowboy logic, but most of all he is so loyal to his friends. He certainly has his faults, but if you ever need backup, he is there for you no matter what. And I am VERY upset about a certain event that happened and BROKE HIS HEART!!!!!!! AHHHHH!!! THE MAN JUST WANTS TO BE HAPPY!!!!
Riley Poole
(National Treasure)
Riley Poole is the best! He is the perfect opposite of Ben, but is equally smart in his area of expertise which is all things tech! He has great confidence in Ben, and is willing to follow wherever he goes. I also love how he owns the role of third-wheel, teasing Ben and Abigail. His comedic delivery and lines are fantastic. (Grace and I often quote the jams & jellies one to each other)!
And he is quite the softie as well. I love how in the end of National Treasure 2, he meets a fan of his, and not Ben's, who usually gets all the glory and fame. Riley's character is also very sacrificial on behalf of his friends, willing to stay behind on the creepy, creaky teeter totter, so Abigail and Ben could go forward. I mean what's not to like?
Complicated: A character you love and hate
Brian Du'Bois
(Ivanhoe)
I know he's the villain, but I kinda like him. Rebecca is my favorite character from Ivanhoe and I feel that Brian really loved her. Yes, he originally kidnapped her and was going to force her to marry him, but then he changed his mind and really desired her consent. And he was willing to sacrifice everything for her: his honor as a knight, his house, title and lands - everything for her. The trial scene when he tries to save her life was so GOOD. Brian, sitting there willing her to read his note and Rebecca, so scared, she forgets all about it. And then the ending....GAH!!!! Now on a realistic scale I wouldn't have wanted Rebecca to turn her back on her faith in order to marry him and the grounds of their relationship would no doubt have made for a rocky future, but still... in a ideal situation, it might have worked.
Thomas Barrow
(Downton Abbey)
Ok, I almost didn't bring this guy up because of the shady (to put it lightly) aspects of his character, but all that aside, the rest of his character does fit this bill for me. I "hate" the fact of how he's so craftily working mischief behind the scenes, and puts on that terribly smug smile, but then on the flip side, I love how when he decides to do something good, he does it so smoothly and "right back atcha", and gives the "bad guy" the same terribly smug smile!....But it's ok this time!
Oddity: A character who was strange, but you loved them that way
Mozzie
(White Collar)
For those of you who don't know, White Collar is a show about an ex-con man (Neil Caffrey) turned FBI Consultant. Mozzie is his best friend who is still on the wrong side of the law, but who uses his expertise to help the FBI with more difficult cases that could use his special skills. I just love all his idiosyncrasies, from his *"dubbage" of FBI agent, Peter Burke, as "Suit" (and his wife "Mrs Suit"), to his crazy conspiracy theories, to his sweet friendship with Neil, to his DEEP quotes from famous people.
*Dubbage- The act of dubbing someone.
Miss Bates
(Emma, 2009)
(I couldn't find a gif of the Laurie Kaplan Miss Bates, so here's another Miss Bates gif.)
Miss Bates is a rather funny character. She is very congenial, talks nonstop about the littlest of things, and has a big heart for her Mother and of course, her niece, Jane Fairfax. I love how in the 2009 version they give you insight into her character. You get to see the hard decision she had to make regarding Jane's future, and what little she has in the world. When Emma visits her after the Box Hill incident, you really get to see Miss Bates without her usual, I'll call it a mask, of cheerfulness and instead see the depth of her love and concern for Jane and how alone she must feel with all her troubles.
So while being a little odd, she is also extremely lovable and the story wouldn't be the same without her.
Queen/King: A female/male character who you admire and aspire to emulate
Danielle DeBarbarac
(Ever After)
I love this movie so much!! Danielle has such strong heroine qualities that shine through her dismal circumstances. She tries to honor her step-mother even though the woman clearly dislikes her. She cares deeply for the servants who have become her family and willingly puts herself in danger to save them. I love and aspire to emulate those sacrificial characters who would do anything for those they love. And Danielle loves to read books and better her mind, and take random swims in lakes like me!! And since I would be concerned about possible reptiles lurking about, a man walking on water next to me would have the same effect!!
Julie &Julia Child
(Julie & Julia)
This might seem seem like a silly character(s) choice, but watching this movie just made me want to get cooking in the kitchen, like Julia and Julie!
I got out Julia Child's cookbook from the library and perused it! I even thought it would be fun to recreate the Julie/Julia Child Project here on our blog, but alas.....(points wooden spoon accusingly at Grace) I couldn't get her to agree! Julie and Julia's food just looks so very scrumptious, and vibrant - it just makes you feel excited about eating and cooking!
So, any takers? Anyone else want to cook through Julia Child's cookbook?
Savior: A character who oddly reminds you of Christ
(We both picked this one)
Timothy
(The Cay)
The Cay is a book about Timothy, an old Jamaican deckhand and Phillip, a spoiled English boy who are stranded on a deserted island after their ship blows up. During the explosion, Phillip is hit on the head and struck blind and Timothy does everything in his power to help the ungrateful and prejudiced boy to survive. He teaches him how to hunt and gather food for himself, build shelters, and even weaves a guiding rope that leads all over the island and makes Phillip memorize his way around. Even while Phillip is spewing out hate toward him, Timothy is as gentle as a dove with him, always caring and looking out for him. Gradually Phillip's attitude toward Timothy changes and their relationship becomes like a father and son. At the end of the book, a hurricane wreaks havoc on the island and Timothy saves Phillip's life by tying them both to a tree and shielding Phillip with his own body to protect him from the storm. He gave his life for the "young Boss" as he called him and even after Timothy was gone, Phillip was able to survive with the skills and knowledge he had taught him. Phillip is rescued a few weeks later.
In Timothy's love, care and sacrifice we get a glimpse of what Messiah does for us. It says in John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man that this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Messiah sacrificed his own life on the cross to pay for the sins of the world, because he loves us and He continues to care for us everyday in a thousand different ways!
P.S. My mom always, without fail, cries whenever we read this book or even talk about it! In fact she has been crying during the correction of this paragraph!!! Love ya Mom!!! If you haven't read this book yet, what are you doing with your life??!!!
Ok, and we are done!! Whew, that was harder than we thought it was going to be!! Thanks for the fun, Ivy! And now, for the nominations....
Lovely choices! And thanks for the tag, but I actually did this a little while ago, and I don't think my answers would be very different now. You can read my post here, though, if you want!
I'm conflicted about Thomas Barrow too. He is sincerely trying to change as the show progresses, but he's still such an underhanded sneak!
Jocelyn Carter is an AMAZING character! I absolutely adored her in Person of Interest. I agree If the show had allowed for romance, then it would have been Reese and Carter, ABSOLUTELY. They had such fabulous chemistry. I watched the show right up until, well, I'm sure you know when I quit watching.
Thanks for tagging me! I'll get it done this week. :)
Yes, "an underhanded sneak", that's a perfect description of Thomas Barrow! We've only seen Person of Interest through the second season, but from what I've heard, I'm assuming you stopped in the 3rd season? I saw a gif the other day that made it look like Reese and Carter had a "moment" or two before... you know (or do you?) happens, which I'm quite happy about!! I can't wait to read your answers!!
Great answers! Especially for (because I know them): Jane Bennet, Fanny Price, George Warleggen, Mr. Darcy, Riley Poole, Thomas, Miss Bates, and Danielle!!!
*gasp* You what now!? Well, it actually shouldn't be a surprise because I'm almost the only person I know who actually ADORES Bella and Billy as a couple. I still just love Vernon as Bella's best friend.
Thanks for the tag! I did it HERE a while ago, but I've been seriously thinking of redoing it. We'll see!
